Brave New Wine is the creative venture of husband-and-wife team Yoko Luscher-Mostert and Andries Mostert. Born from a desire to reclaim the joy in winemaking, the duo craft wines that are fun, honest, and full of character. Their approach emphasizes minimal intervention, natural ferments, and a respect for the unique fruit of the Great Southern Wine Region.
The Story Behind the Wines
Andries Mostert’s path to winemaking began after leaving architecture school and immersing himself in the world of wine. Training at some of Australia’s most respected estates—including Moss Wood, Picardy, Shaw and Smith, Plantagenet, and Howard Park—he honed his skills across multiple regions and vintages, even venturing to Italy and New Zealand. Along the way, he met Yoko, and together they embarked on a mission to craft wines that reflected both terroir and their own playful, hands-on philosophy.
After several professional setbacks due to winery closures and redundancies, Yoko and Andries decided to strike out on their own. They now produce small-batch wines with a focus on quality fruit, spontaneity, and enjoyment—living in a rambling mill house with their children, dogs, and heritage chickens, where life and winemaking are intertwined.
Vineyards & Winemaking Philosophy
Fruit is carefully sourced from premium sites in the Great Southern region, with preference given to vineyards that are organic, biodynamic, or sustainably managed. Minimal intervention is key: all wines are naturally fermented, unfined, unfiltered, and contain only a trace of sulfites (with some completely sulphur-free).
Winemaking is approached with a light touch, using tools such as large ceramic eggs, oak, and traditional techniques to preserve the integrity and expressiveness of the grapes. The resulting wines are idiosyncratic, textural, and vividly expressive of their place.
