A Story Rooted in Passion & Place
Adelina began as a family project in the 1980s, when Will Gardner made wines for friends from the family estate. His daughter Jen reignited the idea in the late ’90s, and after meeting Col McBryde at university in 2001, the two released Adelina’s first commercial vintage in 2003. The vineyard, established in 1986, sits on Wendouree Road East in the Springfarm sub-region, neighbored by Clare Valley’s most historic sites.
The People Behind the Wine
Jen and Col both hold PhDs in oenology and have spent decades working across New Zealand, the U.S., and Australia before settling in Clare. Their shared experience and passion drive Adelina’s distinctive approach, balancing tradition with a deep respect for the land.
The Vineyards & Winemaking Philosophy
Adelina’s estate vineyards include shiraz (planted 1915), grenache (1940), and pedro ximénez (1915), alongside newer plantings of shiraz, mataro, and malbec. Certified organic, the vineyards are farmed with biodynamic principles to preserve vine health and terroir. Beyond their estate, Adelina collaborates with select Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills growers to craft wines that reflect both variety and place. Winemaking is purposefully low-tech, with rustic tools and a minimalist hand — the most advanced piece of equipment is famously the coffee machine.
Signature Wines
The Estate Shiraz is Adelina’s flagship, produced from 100-year-old vines rooted in red sand, limestone, slate, and clay. Extended fermentation and maturation in oak yield a wine of depth and expression. Italian varietals such as arneis and nebbiolo, grown in the Adelaide Hills, round out the range with an old-world sensibility fused with South Australian character.
