Gilbert Family Wines

South Australia
Founded in 2004 by fifth-generation winemaker Simon Gilbert. The philosophy focuses on pure, elegant, and vibrant wines that are true to the character of the varietals.

Heritage and History

Simon’s great-great-grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, planted the first Riesling vines in South Australia in 1847 at Pewsey Vale, Eden Valley.

Simon began his journey in 1973, aged 18, working as a cellar hand at Leo Buring, then part of Lindeman’s, who supported him throughout his oenology studies at Roseworthy College.

From 1973 to 1984, he gained extensive experience at Lindeman’s Coonawarra, Pathway, and Rough Hoome Coonawarra vineyards, developing a technical and analytical approach to winemaking.

The Gilbert Family Wine Company

In 2004, Simon founded the family boutique winery, offering wine consultancy, brokering, and export services.
In 2010, he launched the Gilbert by Simon Gilbert label with the ethos of simple, fresh winemaking.

  • 2015: Named a James Halliday Five Star Winery

  • Wines have received numerous awards, reviews, and medals

In 2016, Simon teamed up with his son Will and nephew Mark, establishing Gilbert + Gilbert, a continuation of the family’s legacy of handcrafted cool-climate wines from South Australia.
