About This Wine
The ‘Rende’ Grenache is a single barrel select, produced only in the finest vintages. 2021 marks the second release of this microbatch wine.
The Rende Vineyard lies in the northernmost, high-altitude area of Blewitt Springs (250m), on unconsolidated sands. Vines grow without irrigation, with roots penetrating sand and silt-loam to access water from the clay base beneath, which offers excellent water-holding capacity. Over decades, Michael and Robert Rende have discovered numerous pockets of ancient maritime shells and deposits throughout the property.
Viticulture & Vinification
The 2021 vintage will be remembered as one of the greatest in South Australian history, particularly for Grenache from Blewitt Springs. Abundant sunshine, moderate rainfall, and the absence of extreme heat created near-perfect ripening conditions.
This single barrel came from a 900kg ferment from the third of four harvest picks (23 March) from the Charlie quadrant, known for producing the finest fruit on the vineyard. Two-thirds whole bunch was placed uncrushed at the bottom of the fermenter, topped with destemmed whole berries. A spontaneous fermentation followed by five weeks of post-ferment maceration preceded a gentle, extended vertical basket press.
Matured for 16 months in a 600L seasoned French oak demi-muid, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration, following careful decanting.
