The Better Half
Marlborough, New Zealand
Brand Overview
The Better Half is a playful nod to the friendly rivalry between husband-and-wife winemakers George and Jules Elworthy. Based in Marlborough at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the label celebrates dreamers, pioneers, and adventurers. It’s a tribute to couples who dare to dream big and “fly high.”
The Big Question
With Jules already a well-known New Zealand winemaker, George chose the tongue-in-cheek name “The Better Half” for his own label. A bold and lighthearted move, George, under Jules’ guidance, began making wine and quickly fell in love with the craft. His background includes aviation, aircraft restoration, investing, and mountain biking, but he is content to let his winemaking speak for itself under the label name.
What’s on the Label
The label reflects George’s love for vintage aircraft, with bird emblems inspired by airline iconography and rivet patterns referencing his Fairchild airplane restorations. Two birds represent the couple: the eagle as George (risk-taker and visionary) and the dove as Jules (meticulous, loving, and steady). Together they form a complementary and unflappable team.
