Quealy Wines

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Pioneering Pinot Gris/Grigio and cool-climate expressions with a focus on site and freshness.

A Legacy of Exploration and Expression

Quealy Wines was founded by Catherine Quealy and Kevin McCarthy, pioneers of Pinot Gris in Australia. Inspired by the Mornington Peninsula’s cool climate, they sought to create wines for curious consumers seeking freshness, vibrancy, and regional distinction. Catherine’s work has earned her the title “Queen of Pinot Gris” and recognition as a “Legend of the Vine” by the Wine Communicators of Australia in 2016. The winery continues to experiment with styles, including fermentation in amphora, while maintaining the classic light, lively Pinot Gris/Grigio that established their reputation.

The Story Behind the Name

Pinot Gris (French) and Pinot Grigio (Italian) refer to the same grape, though stylistically they often differ. French Pinot Gris tends to be richer and more textured, while Italian Pinot Grigio is lighter, fresher, and more mineral. In Australia, winemakers have flexibility in naming and style, allowing Quealy to produce wines that showcase both expressions within the same philosophy.

Vineyards & Terroir

  • Musk Creek Vineyard – Established 1994, 11 acres planted to Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Muscat Rouge à Petit Grains. The North-North East facing valley slopes to the sea, just 5 km from Westernport Bay. Deep, spring-fed clay soils create aromatic wines with high natural acidity. Success here requires careful management to harness the vineyard’s natural vigor.

  • Balnarring Vineyard – 17 acres of the 40-acre Quealy property, gently sloping north on duplex soil with marginal drainage. Planted to 17 rows of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Moscato Giallo, Riesling, and Chardonnay, contributing to the Pobblebonk field blend. The vineyard drains to a dam that supports wildlife, and the rest of the property has been gradually restored with native vegetation, including tea trees, swamp gums, and flowering shrubs.

Winemaking Philosophy

Quealy focuses on crafting expressive, site-driven wines. The vineyard management and winemaking process emphasize freshness, aromatic purity, and varietal clarity. New techniques such as amphora fermentation are explored alongside traditional methods, reflecting a balance of innovation and respect for the grape.
