Montalto Wines

Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Sculpture, vineyards, and a dedication to site-driven, sustainable wines.

A Heartland for Wine and Nature

Founded in 2002, Montalto reflects a deep love of nature, people, and the land. Set on the Mornington Peninsula, the estate combines vineyards, olive groves, gardens, natural wetlands, and sculpture to create a holistic experience. Each element of the estate is guided by a philosophy of producing with care, respect, and attention, fostering wines and produce that are authentic expressions of their environment.

The Person Behind the Wines

Simon Black, appointed winemaker in 2010, brings decades of experience in start-up wineries and cool-climate viticulture. With formative stints at Willow Creek, Heathcote Estate, Clyde Park, and Alpine Valleys, Black has honed a philosophy centered on subregional expression and the individuality of each vineyard parcel. Under his guidance, Montalto wines are defined by precision, elegance, and the influence of terroir, particularly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Vineyards & Winemaking Philosophy

Fruit is sourced from seven carefully selected vineyards across the Mornington Peninsula, from the warmest site at Tuerong to the coolest at Main Ridge. The focus is on low-cropping, hand-tended vines, minimal chemical use, and dry-grown practices. Winemaking emphasizes subtlety and site expression: low sulfur, wild yeast fermentations, natural malolactic conversion, and whole-bunch inclusion where appropriate.

Signature Wines

  • Chardonnay – Elegant, mineral-driven, with subtle oak and expressive regional character.

  • Pinot Noir – Balanced, layered, and reflective of each vineyard’s microclimate.

  • Other Varieties – Pinot Gris, Grigio, Riesling, Rosé, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, and Moscato, all made with an eye toward individuality and terroir.
Experimental Batches – Exploring vineyard nuances, fermentation techniques, and stylistic expression.

Aesthetic & Identity

Montalto is defined by a union of art, nature, and wine. Sculpture and gardens reflect the estate’s creative spirit, while the wines showcase elegance, restraint, and clarity of site. Every bottle embodies the philosophy of producing with love, capturing the essence of the Mornington Peninsula and the dedication of those who tend it.
