Edouard Duval
Champagne, Côte des Bar, France
Overview
Founded in Bligny by the monks of Cluny Abbey, the Prieuré de Sainte Eulalie played a key role in shaping winemaking on the Côte des Bar. In the 1950s, Charles Roger Duval acquired the estate, which spans 28 hectares as a continuous monopole. Today, Edouard Duval, his grandson, oversees production, crafting internationally acclaimed Champagnes in a signature style that blends tradition, innovation, and sustainability.
Terroir & Vineyards
The estate’s soils—rich in marls, Jurassic limestone, oyster fossils, clay, and calcium carbonate—impart minerality, complexity, and elegance to the wines. Four distinct soil horizons influence the character of the grapes, creating nuanced flavors in each Champagne. The vineyard is primarily planted with Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%), with grapes hand-harvested and vinified plot by plot.
Winemaking Philosophy
Edouard Duval balances traditional Champagne methods with innovative techniques:
Secondary fermentation in bottle (Méthode Traditionnelle)
Use of Burgundian demi-muids and stainless steel for fermentation and aging
Minimal intervention: natural malolactic fermentation, no fining, low dosage (Extra Brut/Brut Nature)
Precise selection and maceration for the Saignée rosé
Extended aging (3–10 years) for complexity and finesse
Key Champagnes
Brut Eulalie – 77% Pinot Noir / 23% Chardonnay; approachable, rich, and elegant (€41.50).
Noir d’Eulalie – 100% Pinot Noir; intense, complex, extra brut, showcasing oyster marl terroir (€50.00).
Blanc d’Eulalie – 100% Chardonnay; floral, vibrant, and refined, minimal dosage (€53.50).
Saignée d’Eulalie – 100% Pinot Noir rosé; fresh, elegant, full of red fruit and herbal notes (€61.50).
Sustainability & Vision
Edouard Duval is committed to ecological and respectful viticulture, maintaining old vines, manual harvesting, and sustainable vineyard practices. Their goal is to produce wines that reflect the heritage of the Côte des Bar and the unique terroir of Sainte Eulalie, while crafting Champagnes of elegance, complexity, and approachability.
