Franschhoek Valley, Western Cape, South Africa
Heritage, Terroir & Distinction
A Legacy Reimagined
Founded in 1984 by Anthonij Rupert, Anthonij Rupert Wines is a prestigious estate in the Franschhoek Valley beneath the Groot Drakenstein Mountains. After Anthonij’s passing in 2001, his brother Johann Rupert took over, building the state-of-the-art Anthonij Rupert Cellar and collaborating with internationally acclaimed oenologist Michel Rolland. Today, the estate honors Anthonij’s vision by producing wines of exceptional quality, precision, and expression of the Cape’s unique terroir.
The Estate and Its History
The L’Ormarins Estate, home to Anthonij Rupert Wines, has a history dating back to the 17th century when Huguenot settlers established vineyards in the region. The estate was purchased by Dr. Anton Rupert in 1968, and under Anthonij Rupert’s guidance, it became a national champion in South African wine competitions by 1989. L’Ormarins combines historic Cape Dutch architecture, restored heritage cellars, and carefully preserved old vines to create an estate that honors the past while embracing modern winemaking.
Vineyards & Winemaking Philosophy
The estate spans multiple vineyard sites, including Franschhoek, Elandskloof, Citrusdal Mountain, and Skurfberg, offering diverse soils, altitudes, and microclimates. Vineyards are farmed sustainably, with an emphasis on hand-harvesting and meticulous sorting. Old vines are preserved to maximize intensity, texture, and site expression. Winemaking blends traditional techniques with modern innovations, focusing on balance, elegance, and longevity.
